Top news of the day: Dozens feared dead in Switzerland bar fire; Vodafone Idea to challenge ₹638 crore GST penalty order, and more
Dozens of people are presumed dead and about 100 injured, most of them seriously, following a fire at a bar in a Swiss Alps resort town during a New Year’s celebration, police said on Thursday (January 1, 2026). “Several tens of people” were killed at the bar, Le Constellation, Valais Canton police commander Frederic Gisler said during a news conference. Work is underway to identify the victims and inform their families, but “that will take time and for the time being, it is premature to give you a more precise figure,” Mr. Gisler said, adding that the community is “devastated.”
Telecom operator Vodafone Idea (VIL) on Thursday (January 1, 2026) said it has received about ₹638 crore GST penalty order from the Office of Additional Commissioner, Central Goods and Service Tax, Ahmedabad. In a statutory filing, Vodafone Idea said it disagrees with the order and will take legal action against it. The filing comes just a day after debt-laden telco received a major relief on its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues, with the Union Cabinet on Wednesday (December 31, 2025) deciding to freeze its dues along with a 5-year payment moratorium and allowing capped AGR dues to be reassessed.
