The touchy-feely STEM: Why its future depends on culture, not just skills
STEM isn’t just about teaching students to crunch numbers and code. The real work? Shifting the entire culture around science, technology, engineering, and math. For years, the focus has been on increasing enrollment and ‘filling the pipeline,’ as they say. That still matters, but it’s just not enough anymore. The big challenge now is making sure STEM actually feels like a place where anyone can belong, contribute, and lead, no matter where they come from.
A healthy STEM culture needs to be accessible and innovative. It should help students build their sense of self, not just test scores. Surely, technical skills matter a lot, but so do curiosity, resilience, empathy, and leadership. These are the traits young people need to keep up and stand out in a world that’s constantly changing.
