⛳ Usman Khawaja & Golf: What’s the Story?
He Played Golf Before the First Ashes Test
Khawaja played a round of golf just before the first Test of the 2025/26 Ashes series.
He reportedly skipped an optional training session to do so.
He played with teammate Mitchell Starc, who bowled really well in that Test.
Back Spasms During the Test
On Day 1 of the Test, Khawaja had back spasms and left the field.
Because of ICC rules (time off the field), he couldn’t open the batting in that innings.
Cricket Australia’s (CA) Response
Todd Greenberg (CA CEO) defended him, saying there’s no proven link between his golf round and the back spasms.
Greenberg argued golf helps players mentally unwind, and that Khawaja is experienced and knows how to manage his body.
He also noted that such golf sessions are not uncommon in the Australian team’s culture.
Criticism & Debate
Some critics believe playing golf right before a Test, especially at Khawaja’s age, is risky.
Former players and media have questioned why he skipped a training session for golf.
But others argue this is part of how players relax and prepare — and that the back spasm could just be bad luck.
