South Africa has sought to preserve the integrity and stature of the Group of 20 top economies, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Saturday in opening remarks to the G20 summit in Johannesburg.
He added that South Africa had sought to ensure that the development priorities of the Global South and the African continent had found expression in the G20’s agenda
The two-day G20 Leaders’ Summit is set to commence on Saturday (November 22, 2025). The first summit of the group of major economies to be held in Africa is further marked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s pointed absence.

The G20 nations hold enormous potential to ease suffering and set the world on a more peaceful course, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said, urging the bloc to lead the action required. “Now is the time for leadership and vision,” he said, citing conflicts, climate chaos, economic uncertainty, inequality and a collapse in global aid.
